UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his wife Akshata Murty invited guests from the Hindu community and hosted a special Diwali event at 10 Downing Street in the United Kingdom. Images of Sunak and Murty lighting traditional lamps, or diyas, at their official residence were posted on social media alongside the post.

Akshata, daughter of Indian billionaire and philanthropist N.R. Narayana Murthy, and Prime Minister Sunak welcomed guests from various communities to join in the Diwali celebrations. The couple’s choice to host such an event in the heart of British politics is a testament to their belief in fostering understanding and unity among different cultures.

As the evening unfolded, Rishi Sunak and Akshata Murthy took center stage, expressing their delight at hosting the Diwali celebration. Rishi, known for his eloquence and financial acumen, emphasized the importance of cultural exchange and the role it plays in building a stronger and more harmonious society.

The Diwali event at Downing Street was not just a display of cultural pride but also an opportunity for the couple to connect with the Indian community in the UK. Rishi Sunak, the first Prime Minister having Indian heritage has been a trailblazer in British politics, and his role in shaping economic policies has been widely acclaimed.

The reception attended by Indian diaspora, parliamentarians, entrepreneurs, and Bollywood celebrities like Akshay Kumar, Preity Zinta, Twinkle Khanna. The Prime Ministerial residence was adorned with marigolds and candles for the occasion. Sunak, a cricket fan, made a light-hearted reference to the World Cup and Team India’s winning streak, suggesting it was best to “switch” to the Indian side of the family.

Sunak reflected on his “extra special” Diwali, reminiscing about his visit to India to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the G20 Summit in New Delhi as the first British Indian Prime Minister. He described his visit to India for the G20 as an “incredible moment” and a “proud moment for everyone”.

Temples from around the UK contributed to an Annakut display as festive offerings to God. Children from the Avanti Court Primary School recited religious shlokas at the reception. Sunak spoke about his family’s story, particularly his grandmother’s journey from East Africa to the UK over 60 years ago. He highlighted the themes of hope, faith, ambition, and prioritizing the next generation.
