President Murmu eloquently highlighted the enduring relevance of Dr. Ambedkar’s contributions to the nation. He emphasized the need to uphold the values of justice, equality, fraternity, and liberty—values that Dr. Ambedkar considered essential for a thriving democracy. The president also stressed the importance of constant reflection on the Constitution and its principles to ensure the nation’s progress.

The unveiling was followed by plantation of saplings by President Murmu and CJI Chandrachud. The event was attended by several judges of the top court. The decision to erect the statue of Dr. Ambedkar stemmed from the request made by a group of lawyers who identify with the Ambedkarite movement.

In December last year, they had penned a letter to Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud asking for a statue of Dr. Ambedkar on the lawns of the Supreme Court. Later, in September this year, the Supreme Court Arguing Counsel Association (SCACA) had also made a representation seeking the installation of the statue.

The unveiling of the statue in the Supreme Court on National Constitution Day is not merely a symbolic gesture; it is a call to action. It serves as a reminder to citizens, lawmakers, and the judiciary alike to remain committed to the ideals enshrined in the Constitution.
