THE ROLE
Job Introduction
BBC World Service is an international multimedia broadcaster, part of BBC News, delivering a wide range of language and regional services and working increasingly with other parts of BBC News to serve global audiences.
BBC Hindi is one of many language services serving audiences in India. We have a 24/7 website with a very vibrant social media presence as well as a presence on radio and a specific focus on women and young audiences. This role is based in the BBC’s Delhi bureau, working closely and collaboratively with all teams in that office and with teams in the BBC’s headquarters in London to deliver the best service for BBC audiences.
All Language Services are multiplatform, with a multimedia website and a focus on digital video, text and interactivity for both desktop and mobile platforms, and a daily TV news programme. We aim to make international news relevant to an Indian audience, and bring international perspectives to bear on Indian and global developments.
Main Responsibilities
We have an exciting opportunity for a multimedia journalist working as a key part of the Hindi Service producing content for the website, social media, TV and podcast. Key responsibilities include:
- Write, edit and produce a range of video, audio and digital content for BBC Hindi audiences on Website, TV, Social Platforms and podcast to the highest professional standards.
- May be required to present the content in audio, visual or both. This might be live or recorded.
- May include the production and presentation of BBC Hindi content across platfroms. This might be live or recorded.
- Exercise editorial judgment in developing story ideas and producing accurate and impartial journalism.
- Write scripts, produce packages, translate and compile content for the website, TV and podcast as well as doing news stories for the BBC Hindi across platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Instagram and Twitter etc.
- To liaise closely with other team members in the Indian Language services, Newsgathering, Monitoring and other departments in the BBC, to ensure that output material is shared, duplication is avoided, and best practice is adhered to.
- Take a lead within a team setting or on delivering a specific piece of journalism or project as appropriate.
- To tailor different news treatments for different audiences ensuring that the output reflects the audiences we serve, and their needs on different platforms.
- To prioritise and plan activities taking into account all the relevant issues and factors such as deadlines, staffing and resources available.
- Delivering to tight deadlines while maintaining the highest editorial standards.
- At all times to carry out duties in accordance with the BBC health and safety policy.
Are you the right candidate?
- Ability to write in Hindi on current affairs for publication at a short notice
- Fluent in English and able to communicate effectively, able to translate from English to Hindi to a publishable standard
- Significant recent experience as a journalist, with a good knowledge of production techniques for Digital, Social and Video platforms.
- Ability to write scripts and content for digital and social media as well as broadcast, and adapt with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to the differing audiences and platforms
- A demonstrable interest in working in a multimedia environment and in encouraging audience involvement.
- A demonstrable interest in digital media and how to exploit it for the BBC’s purposes.
- A passion for International news and a thorough current knowledge and understanding of news and current affairs as well as history, social issues, business arts/culture and sports.
- Understands how a team works effectively.
- Able to build and maintain effective working relationships with a range of people.
- Demonstrates a commitment to improving diversity in the BBC and understands how individual differences can benefit the BBC.
- Effective planning and organising skills, ability to concentrate on several areas of work at one time, delivering consistently to deadlines and reacting positively to changes and conflicting priorities.
- The flexibility and adaptability to sustain performance, particularly under pressure to meet deadlines and changing priorities and circumstances.
- An understanding of health and safety procedures and how they apply to broadcasting.
