Prime Minister Narendra Modi will participate in the UN World Climate Action Summit in Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE), on the sidelines of the COP28 Summit, scheduled from November 30 to December 1 and will deliver a national statement focusing on India’s climate action, said government sources on Friday. A source told that PM Modi will reach the UAE on November 30 and deliver India’s national statement during the second day of the UN climate talks on December 1 and return on the same day. Several heads of states and governments and eminent personalities from civil society, youth, business and more sectors will discuss actions towards climate change.
PM Modi has been championing the Lifestyle for Environment (LIFE) movement by urging countries to adopt planet-friendly living practices and move away from consumerist approaches. He has also announced his decision to make India a green energy hub.
In sharp contrast, the US contributed to 17% of global emissions for over 170 years despite accounting for only 4% of the world’s population, while India has accounted for only 5% of greenhouse gas emissions to date while representing 18% of the world population.
Earlier this year, he said that climate change is causing extreme weather events more and more frequently, and these challenges are felt most by the global South. Meanwhile, the Indian government is implementing several programmes like the National Action Plan on Climate Change (NAPCC) in the field of solar energy, energy efficiency, water and sustainable agriculture among others.
India has affirmed to achieve the goals set according to the 2015 Paris Agreement, particularly to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius. India aims to reduce the intensity of emissions by 45% by 2030 from 2005 levels and achieve 50% cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030.
The COP28 will be chaired by the UAE from November 30 to December 12 and will witness the first “global stocktake”, a periodic review of collective progress to meet the Paris Agreement goals that will shape forthcoming climate action plans or NDCs by 2025.
Union Environment Minister Bhupender Yadav will participate in high-level events and roundtables of the 28th session of the annual climate talks (COP28), including on finance for climate goals, emissions reduction, adaptation to climate impacts, and transitioning to a green economy with inclusivity.
