Many individuals aspire to start a new life in the Great White North, hoping for a better future. However, the dream of a fresh start in Canada can sometimes lead to desperate measures, including fraudulent immigration practices by submitting fraudulent documents and providing false information.
In a recent case, an Indian man faced the consequences of his actions, as he was fined $20,000 for immigration fraud in Canada. The 41-year-old has been fined for causing immigration fraud by misrepresenting documents to help newcomers get permits to work in the Canadian province of Manitoba, according to a media report.

The Provincial Court of Manitoba on Monday heard that Avatar Singh Sohi claimed that an Indian woman –who came to Canada on a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), was working as a nanny when she wasn’t. LMIAs are issued after there is a demonstrated need for a temporary foreign worker because there are no citizens or permanent residents available to do the work.
The woman was working illegally elsewhere, but Avtar gave her pay stubs to show she was working for him from March 2019 to July 2021. He also provided her with several signed documents that she used as part of her permanent residence application.
Avatar Singh Sohi pleaded guilty to misrepresentation under the Canada Immigration and Refugee Protection Act but the federal crown attorney added that the Indian man had committed fraud by creating false documents for immigration purposes. He further stated that his behavior erodes the trust of our immigration system and must be deterred and denounced.
The case of the Indian man fined for immigration fraud underscores the importance of protecting the integrity of Canada’s immigration system. It is a reminder that the country’s immigration policies are designed to be fair and inclusive but also stringent to ensure that those who enter Canada do so in compliance with the law.
