In a move that has delighted many, Thailand recently made a significant decision to boost tourism and strengthen its ties with India by scrapping the visa requirement for Indian and Taiwanese travelers starting next month until May 2024. The decision to eliminate the visa requirement for tourists is expected to have a profound impact on Thailand’s tourism industry.

According to spokesperson Chai Wacharonke, arrivals from India and Taiwan will be permitted to stay in country for a duration of 30 days. India has emerged as Thailand’s fourth-largest source market for tourism this year, following Malaysia, China, and South Korea, with approximately 1.2 million arrivals.

In September, it scrapped Visa requirement for the Chinese tourists as it was the country’s top pre-pandemic tourism market with 11 million of the record 39 million arrivals in 2019. India has been Thailand’s fourth largest source market for tourism so far this year with about 1.2 million arrivals after Malaysia, China and South Korea.

By simplifying the process of traveling to Thailand, it is likely to attract a greater number of Indian tourists. The country has already been a favorite destination for Indian honeymooners, adventure seekers, and those in search of cultural experiences. With the visa requirement removed, it is now even more appealing for Indians to choose Thailand as their next vacation spot.

The latest government data reveals that from January to October 29, Thailand received a total of 22 million visitors, contributing 927.5 billion baht (approximately $25.67 billion) to the country’s economy. Hotels, restaurants, local businesses, and the travel industry as a whole contributed in boosting up the economy. In addition, the Indian film industry often chooses Thailand as a filming location thus catering a platform to attract cine frenzy tourists to opt Thailand as a vacation spot.

Thailand’s decision to waive the visa requirement for Indian travelers is a significant step toward enhancing tourism, diplomatic relations, and cultural exchange between the two countries. With the potential for a boost in tourism, a positive impact on the Thai economy, and a strengthening of diplomatic ties, this move is a win-win for both nations.
