Northern States

The IMD explains that the cold conditions are due to jet stream winds at high altitudes, causing cold air to sink over the plains of North India. This phenomenon is expected to last for the next five days, keeping the cold wave strong.

In many parts of Punjab and some areas of Haryana-Chandigarh, temperatures have dropped to a bone-chilling 2-5 degree Celsius, while regions like Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan are experiencing 6-8 degree Celsius.

The forecast also mentions the possibility of light rainfall and snowfall in the higher regions of Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on January 17 to 19.

Dense fog warnings are issued for various areas, with Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and parts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, likely to have very dense fog during the late night and early morning hours.

Measurement of Severity

According to the India meteorological department (IMD) classification, ‘very dense’ fog occurs when visibility ranges from 0 to 50 meters, ‘dense’ fog is between 51 and 200 meters, ‘moderate’ is within 201 and 500 meters, and ‘shallow’ fog is in the range of 501 to 1,000 meters.

The state forecast indicates dry weather. The IMD has issued a warning of dense to very dense fog likely at isolated places over the state, with a possibility of cold day to severe cold day at isolated places. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 17 and 7 degrees Celsius, respectively.

However, the weather forecast for the next few days indicates a slight rise in minimum temperatures likely due to easterly winds. As per the seven-day weather prediction, the temperature in Delhi and NCR is likely to reach 10 degrees Celsius on Thursday, 12 degrees Celsius on Friday, 12 degrees Celsius on Saturday, 12 degrees Celsius on Sunday, 12 degrees Celsius on Monday and 12 degrees Celsius on Tuesday.
