Gurugram woman arrested for duping people

In a recent case that highlights the perils of financial fraud and the importance of vigilance when dealing with financial matters, a woman has been arrested in Gurugram for posing as a credit card customer service officer and duping unsuspecting victims. Law enforcement authorities have reported the confiscation of SIM card that was employed in carrying out the deception from her possession. The entire scam came into light when a local resident lodged a complaint with the cyber-crime police station in western division on October 21. In his FIR, the complainant mentioned that he had fallen victim to an online scam amounting to Rs. 5 lakh approximately.

He further stated that posing as a helpful customer service representative, she would engage her targets in conversation, gaining their trust and encouraging them to reveal sensitive financial information. Once she had gathered enough information, she would convince her victims that their credit card details had been compromised and needed to be verified for security purposes.

The victims, unsuspecting and concerned about the safety of their finances, would willingly provide their credit card numbers, expiration dates, CVV codes, and even OTPs (One-Time Passwords) received on their mobile phones, thinking they were speaking with a genuine representative of their credit card company.

In the course of the police interrogation, the accused disclosed that along with her associates, she had obtained a counterfeited number and posed as a bank’s credit card customer care representative. The number would surface when any individual would Google search for the contact information of the respective customer care contact details.

According to official report, Cyber ACP Vipin Ahalwat as saying that a team, under the leadership of Inspector Bacchu Singh, succesfully nabbed the accused from Palam Vihar region. She has been identified as Avni Ashish Kumar Patel and originally hails from Valsad district in Gujarat.

The advent of technology and the ease of online transactions have opened new avenues for fraudsters to exploit unsuspecting individuals. Scammers use various tactics, including impersonation, phishing emails, and social engineering techniques to gain access to sensitive financial information.
