The move comes in response to the potential threat posed by the approaching cyclonic weather system, highlighting the railway’s commitment to passenger well-being and operational integrity.
The South Eastern Railway cancelled three trains, including Howrah-Chennai Mail, scheduled to depart on Saturday, owing to an impending cyclonic storm forecast by the Meteorological department.
An SER official said that the other two trains to be cancelled are the Howrah-SMVT (Bengaluru) express and the Hatia-SMVT (Bengaluru) express.
The Bay of Bengal, notorious for spawning cyclones, has once again become a focal point of meteorological concern.
As a cyclone gathers strength and inches closer to the coastal areas, authorities are leaving no stone unturned in their efforts to mitigate potential risks.
A deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal is likely to move in a west-northwestward direction and intensify into a cyclonic storm by Sunday.
The cyclonic storm brought light to moderate rain with isolated heavy downpour in north coastal Tamil Nadu from Saturday, the Met said.
The decision aims to safeguard passengers and railway assets, as extreme weather events can lead to hazardous conditions on railway tracks and compromise the safety of train operations.
The railway authorities are actively communicating the cancellations to passengers through various channels, including announcements at stations, online updates, and social media platforms.
Passengers affected by these cancellations are being provided with information about alternative travel options and refund procedures.
Clear communication is key during such situations, and the SER is working diligently to keep passengers informed and minimize inconvenience.
