India and Finland on Wednesday decided to celebrate the 75th anniversary of establishment of their diplomatic relations next year in a “befitting manner”.

In 2024, India and Finland will mark a significant milestone as they celebrate the 75th anniversary of their diplomatic ties. What began as a formal establishment of relations in 1949 has since evolved into a deep and multifaceted partnership encompassing trade, technology, culture, and shared values.

The decision was taken during the 12th Foreign Office Consultations (FOC) here. The Indian side was led by Sanjay Verma, Secretary (West), Ministry of External Affairs. The Finnish side was led by Jukka Salovaara, Permanent State Secretary of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs.

Both the sides also reviewed bilateral relations including sustainability partnership, mobility, cultural relations, people-to-people contact, trade and investment, political engagements, education, and digital partnership. Discussions were also held on multilateral cooperation on the Arctic and reform of the UN Security Council.
While the formal diplomatic relationship commenced in 1949, historical and cultural connections between India and Finland trace back centuries. Both countries have a rich history of art, literature, and cultural heritage that transcends geographical boundaries.
Finland’s expertise in renewable energy and sustainable solutions aligns well with India’s ambitious goals in the green energy sector. Together, they have worked on projects to enhance energy efficiency, waste management, and the development of smart cities.
Their journey, from the establishment of formal relations to the present, reflects a deepening partnership encompassing trade, technology, culture, and shared values.
