Passport can be stated as a mandatory document during cross-border travels thus to keep one’s identity safe and protected as a foreign national in a foreign land.

Passport helps us to travel far and beyond across the globe working as a safety net around us thus justifying the identity of our nationality. Just like AADHAAR works as an identity proof for Indians to prove their citizenship, in similar ways, a passport supports identifying who we are in foreign lands or nations.

History of Passport
Since the 1920s, passports have been used as a means of official travel documents simply to identify their own countrymen in foreign lands. The concept of a worldwide standard passport was introduced during the aftermath of the First World War, championed by the League of Nations, a body tasked with the heavy burden of maintaining peace. A year later, perhaps recognizing a political opportunity, the U.S. passed the Emergency Quota Act of 1921 and later, the Immigration Act of 1924 limiting the inflow of immigrants.
Beginning from the year 1924 to the present year of 2023, passports have seen many changes in their respective nations. As the world celebrates its 100th year, revolution in Passports can be seen as the next big thing. World's first digital passport has finally been introduced and the country to do so is Finland.
First Country to Introduce Digital Passport
According to Euronews, Finland became the first country to launch digital passports, aiming to streamline and enhance international travel. Finnish travelers departing from Helsinki to the UK now have the option to present a digital ID on their mobile device instead of their physical passport.
The Finnish Border Control has noted that this marks the first instance worldwide where a digital passport is accepted in a genuine border control setting promising a seamless and promising travel experience.

The Digital Travel Credential (DTC) represents a digital rendition of a physical passport, designed to be stored on a smartphone. It adheres to the guidelines set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), which is actively developing a global framework for digital travel documents.
The initiative was introduced by Finnair, airport operator Finavia, and the Finnish on August 28, 2023. The collaboration is being overseen by the Finnish Border Guard, which will likely continue till February 2024 at Helsinki Airport's border control.
How To Apply for Digital Passport
1. Travelers who are willing to issue digital passports need to register themselves at the Vantaa Main Police Station's license services.
2. Download the FIN DTC Pilot App.
3. Then share your identity as it works on facial recognition and biometric data for identity verification.
4. The travelers can submit their data via the app to the Finnish Border Guard 36 hours to 4 hours before departure.
5. When traveling they can use their smartphones to scan the QR Code for the confirmation of travel.
Finland might be the first country to introduce the digital passport to the world but it is not the only nation in favor of a faster, smoother, more secure way of travelling. Other countries like the UK, the USA, South Korea, and Poland are working on similar projects.
